Understanding the Australian Work Visa Fundamentals

If you have skills and qualifications that Australia needs, you can apply for a Work Visa under a Skilled Visa Category using SkillSelect. Under this category, you can be nominated for a Skilled Visa by a State or Territory Government, or by an Employer. Details are given below.

Skilled Regional (Provisional) Subclass 489

This 4-year provisional Visa offers a unique opportunity for holders to live and work in a regional area in order to obtain Permanent Residence.

To qualify, you would require either the sponsorship of a relative living in the designated area or a nomination by the State or Territory Government.

Further, you may also require additional qualifications:

  • Meet the pass mark in the skilled migration points test. This is currently set at 60.
  • Be aged between 18 to 44 years (inclusive).
  • Should pass Skills Assessment in an occupation on the relevant Skilled Occupations List.
  • Have good English language skills.
  • Should meet health and character requirements.

The Australian 457 Work Visa

The 457 Visa, or the Temporary Business Long Stay Visa, is the most common pathway of business sponsorship for overseas workers. For many applicants, it is also an indirect pathway that leads to Permanent Residency.

The 457 is a temporary work visa that allows employers to sponsor overseas workers. The positions are nominated skilled positions enlisted in the Skilled Occupations List.

The employers must meet specific sponsorship and nomination criteria. Also, they must be willing to sponsor applicants as part of the Visa application process.

Immediate family members (such as partners and dependent children) can be included in the application. And, they are entitled to live and work here.

Although the primary applicant is constrained to only working with the sponsoring employer in the nominated position, other family members are free to undertake any type of employment. Dependent children are also able to attend school.

Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485)

The Temporary Graduate Subclass 485 Visa is a Work Visa perfectly suitable for international students who have completed 2 years of study in Australia.

It can last anywhere from 18 months to up to 4 years, depending on your specific situation.

It is definitely a good way to extend your stay in Australia! Thus, improving your chances of obtaining a Provisional Skilled Visa, or even Permanent Residency.

The requirements for this Visa type include:

  • Must be younger than 50 years of age.
  • Must hold an eligible Visa.
  • Must have accrued evidence of meeting the English language requirements.
  • Must meet the Australian study requirements.
  • Must meet health and character requirements.
  • Must have health insurance in Australia.
  • Must meet the specific requirements of the stream in which you are applying for the Visa.
You can include members of your family in your application:
  • Spouses, de facto partners and same-sex partners
  • Dependent children

Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485)
